Hi, and welcome to today's episode, my name is Tom Rolley of System IO, will it continue a conversation that we've been having over the last two episodes, three episodes.
In fact, one of which was recognizing that business success often comes with a hidden trap.
And that is that what worked when you were a small business with just yourself for a couple of employees start to break down as you become more successful.
And this leaves you as the entrepreneur, not only guiding the business and leading the business, but also having to tell your team what to do, like you're the source of how to do everything, as well as the troubleshooter.
And this leaves you with no time.
So if you haven't already been through these, go back over the last two or three episodes and have a look at the challenges that you face.
But today, I wanted to talk about an additional challenge that comes from this situation.
And because you are the one telling your team what to do, you're managing your people, this also means that all of the responsibility for quality control falls to you, because you're the one telling them what to do.
And you need to check that things actually got done, as you ask them to be done.
There is no capacity to say, Yep, I can trust 100%, that the verbal translation of what was said to your team actually got done.
Now you could skip on this, you know, you know what, I'm not going to look, I'm not going to check and it's going to send it out there.
But the risk is that you end up having customer complaints.
Also, it could be evident on your front-end marketing, that you just do not have a systematic approach to your business.
And so that may well generate fear in your potential customers.
They're like, you know, there are some problems on the front end that I'm seeing in their marketing.
Could that be showing up in the backend as well? Yeah, most likely it is.
So this leaves you responsible not only for customer fulfillment, but also you've got to have your eye on the advertising and the marketing, in general, to make sure that's been done to a certain standard, that you now not only wearing all the hats of entrepreneur, leader, you also the one that your team asks for what to do, how to do it, you troubleshoot it, and you're on quality control.
Now, because you probably do not have anything documented.
Or if you do your team doesn't use it.
This means it's also very hard to troubleshoot for where the quality control issues are.
Because your team might say, hey, look, you said to do this.
And if this is going on in your life, it's very hard for you to probably remember exactly what was said, particularly when you get into detail.
And sure it might be okay for work that is done very commonly by a team member.
But as they get into either variation on that common work or stuff that is done less frequently, then you've got a real challenge, trying to remember what you said, what they heard, it's a very difficult place to be.
So this is yet another challenge that arises for business that has succeeded and is growing but has left out a critical piece.
And that is that the assumption that managing people can be done at scale, that managing people can be done at ever bigger numbers, and it can't.
If you're finding yourself in a situation, it's very difficult to get the time to stop and go what is going on and where did we go wrong, we need to peel back to a smaller size, which works.
There's plenty of businesses running at 567 employees maybe out to 10 if they're long-term, but there are inherent risks in that if somebody leaves.
Or if you do want to grow beyond that size, it simply will not work.
If you need some help with this head over to systemio.dev.
I'm going to go and continue this exploration.
We'd really line up all the problems and difficulties that come from this experience as you grow as you succeed.
But then suddenly, the challenge of managing people arises.
So if that's where you find yourself head over to systemio.dev and put in your name, put in your email address, go watch the training that I put there for you.
And if you want to explore working together, then you can go ahead and book a time where we can have an initial consultation.
