Lessons from moneyball

I'm actually outside my house.

And there is a large burning fire behind me.

So we'll go check out that in a little bit.

But first, I wanted to share with you an insight that I had.

I've been listening to a book called your next five roves and the author’s references.

The idea that Moneyball made a difference in baseball.

If you haven't seen Moneyball, it's a movie, it's also a book and it actually made a huge difference.

It was like, wow, okay, we're going to focus on some different metrics.

In business, we're going to focus on instead of letting me just get the camera, right, instead of focusing on batting averages, which is what everybody had focused on for years and years and years.

They thought a little differently.

They were like, Okay, what is it that actually makes a difference? In baseball? If you know the answer, then you already know the answer to this.

Like, of course, you know the answer.

I looped that around.

And they are clearing this land.

I believe it's going to go on the market.

Like maybe they're going to build some houses here.

It's pretty cool.

It's pretty like wow, look at that.

So this is what I came home to.

I'm like, Whoa, okay, you guys are burning all this wood.

This is all camphor.

It's like oh, camphor Laurel that they cut down.

Because it's like 100 acres of camphor laurel.

So it's on fire.

Probably not best to breed that smoke.

Probably the best thing but they go like an excavator.

They're dumping on the light putting the wood on.

It's pretty cool.

Pretty cool.

Alright, so let's come back to our business problem.

I'm going to swap over the cameras.

And you know, where's that going to happen? Come on camera.

Alright, so we got, we got Moneyball instead of focusing on batting averages, what did they focus on? They focused on a number of times on a base, it seems pretty easy, right? You're like, okay, focus on how you win the game.

And yet for years that had not been that the focus had been on batting averages, but the Oakland A's started focusing on a number of times on base hired for that, and they started getting results.

Now, this is the same as when you are designing your systems like it might be an easy choice just to randomly choose what you think is going to be.

But what you really want to choose is what makes a difference.

Just like in baseball, it's not the batting average that actually wins the game.

What's required is to get on base, and then get on base again and get on base again.

And then you've got loaded bases, and then you just tap it in swinging sim singles, tap, tap, tap, once the bonuses are loaded, you're good to go.

This insight from Moneyball is the same ID systems that know the result that you want to create.

That is the critical factor.

That's the purpose of the system.

That's the purpose of the processes.

That's the purpose of the templates, it's to create the result that you want, you must be clear on this.

Remember the difference that it made in Moneyball, the Oakland A's, and then I believe it went to the Boston was at the White Sox that never won.

And they use the insights but they had money and so they actually won finally after like a century of trying, and it was because of this change in focus.

So this plays out for you in your systems, that you must focus on the right results.

What is the result that you want? This is the critical insight that I want to share with you.

Your systems create results, make sure you choose the right results.
