Before you go and make that new system in your business...

May 09, 2021

Thanks for joining me for today's episode, I want to share with you a little story about an experience that I had, I was at a team meeting a business meeting.

And this business has quite a few people in is quite big and out of that, there was a clear identification of a problem.

There's something that's not working, it's clearly causing difficulties, there are significant benefits to getting it working.

The significant problems if it remains as it is, and they're like, Great, let's go ahead and create a new system for this.

Let's put in a system for this.

And as I sat there, a question came to me and it was like, well, we'll show me one working system in this business, like where's the one that's working? I know, we've got a lot of half things going on that kind of work, but often died, I just want to see one in this business that is clearly not only working but is robust enough to cope with the demands of the business.

And so that could look like hey, someone's sick, and the system still works, someone goes on holidays, and the system still works.

Somebody takes their place, and they've never done it before.

And it still works.

And it doesn't require you as the entrepreneur to come down and train them.

Like that is a robust system.

And so as I sat there and pondered this question, I am close to 100% sure that there is a grand total of zero of these systems that exist in this business.

And yet, here they are, let's put in a new system.

I'm like, Mike, we haven't got a single one that works.

And it's wonderful that we're going to go and create this new one.

But guess what, it's going to have exactly the same problems that all of the other ones that you are using right now have in that they are not robust, they give variable results, they're dependent on certain people being there, that person goes away, and the whole thing falls apart.

And then that has comp consequences.

And suddenly, there's a fire that they have to put out or someone has to put out, somebody starts complaining, there's a poor outcome, this whole thing sucks.

And so what I wanted to share with you is before you go putting in the second system, how about you get one that works, one that is actually capable of dealing with life in the 21st century? And that means that it's not dependent on anyone person? That yes, there might be a person who usually does a team member who's usually assigned to that, but if they're not there, because guess what, sometimes they won't.

Life happens that system can still be executed, even by someone who's never done it before.

You get that now, you can move to a second system because guess what that experience of how that works is going to translate to the second one.

And instead of having to come back when that first one breaks and put out a fire in it, and then move to the second and go the first and go second.

Oh, no.

Okay, it's that kind of go again, I've got fire there put that out.

And I think I think they're both working on moving to a third or no, the second just got a fire.

And the first has got a fire.

Okay, but what about this, I know we're going to put in a new system, are you really going to, or are you eventually going to end up with exactly the same problem that you're attempting to solve by putting in a system in the first place, and that is that there's a fire, we can't get into the fire, also known as a problem, we'll put in a system that doesn't work to try and fix something so that we get exactly the same outcome.

So here's my suggestion, get one working system.
