I was surfing this morning, and I looked up to see a restaurant built on the edge of the beach.
It is a spectacular spot to eat, no doubt about it.
Looks over the beach up to the lighthouse… And the food is delicious.
However, the restaurant's veranda is now resting on the edge of a collapsing sand dune.
We have had some wild storms, and the beach has eroded, so the entire restaurant is at risk of collapsing.
It has been some years, but collapsing buildings HAVE happened before where I live.
Rough storms consumed entire streets, yet a decision was still made to build this restaurant on the sand.
Do they have insurance?
Possibly! But it would surely be an expensive policy as the chance of destruction of the entire building is very high.
So the question must come - knowing the risks, why was the decision made to build there in the first place?
Going back to listening to the owner weighing up the pros and cons would have been fascinating. To see how they convinced themselves to build on a location that will likely collapse made sense.
Why did they not consider building on a solid foundation instead?
Yet - it is easy to point fingers and wonder :)
So, how does this lesson apply to you and your business?
What do you believe is the foundation of your business?

- Is it your vision?
- Is it your work ethic?
- Is it your customers?
Perhaps. But more important than all of these?
Your Marketing.
This is the foundation that at least gives you the opportunity for massive business success.

- What problem do you solve for them?
- How do you make that offer?
Get these right, and you are building on a solid foundation that can withstand destructive forces AND allow you to have a profitable business that gives your the freedom to live the life of your dreams.
