Why systems are a lot like vaccines 🤯

Why systems are a lot like vaccines.

These two things seem pretty diverse I mean, a vaccine, you take the vaccine, you and then protected against the disease, you don't get the disease systems, aren't they a way to get stuff done to track what's getting done, who's doing it, what status, the results are in where the results are kept? Surely these two things have nothing in common.

But I want you to consider the possibility that they are far more alike than you perhaps at first glance would consider what we have with a vaccine is the prevention of disease, that disease does not happen.

And the problem in this is that you don't know I don't know, we don't know whether it actually protected you.

Were you exposed to the virus or bacteria? Or did you not get exposed? All you know is all we know is you didn't get sick, I didn't get sick, the vaccine appears to have worked, but you can't confirm it.

The outcome is the only thing that we can say, Yes, we didn't get sick.

There are of course, other ways to look.

And you might say, Well, okay, over the population, the number of cases of smallpox has dropped dramatically, the number of cases of measles has dropped dramatically, the number of cases of chickenpox has dropped dramatically that when you look on a population basis, there's far less disease.

But when we look specifically at an individual, they just didn't get sick; they didn't get sick.

What I want you to consider is the possibility that a system allows you not to have chaos, not to have fires, not to have disasters, not to have errors, not to have litigation, not to go bankrupt.

And so, when we're running businesses on systems, they appear to run pretty smoothly.

Sure, there might be the occasional thing that goes wrong, but you can we can track that back through the system and go, Oh, well, look at that.

The system either is wrong, or the system wasn't followed.

But overall, the experience and this is well documented in a wonderful book called work the system by Sam Carpenter; his journey, from chaos to smooth operations, was all based on systems, the ins for implementation of systems.

And when you don't use systems, then you get the chaos when you don't have the vaccines; that's when you get sick.

And people like me might dismiss the value and not realize how much we didn't have to go through and how much it didn't cost because the system worked.

The vaccine works; you don't get sick, the system works your business doesn't get sick.

Systems are exactly like vaccines for business.

They stop your business from getting sick.

And the cool thing is they dramatically ramp up production.

They dramatically ramp up profit and dramatically ramp up protection, all three important things for any business that wants to be in business, make money and stay in business, particularly in these troubled times.

Alright, hope you got a lot of value out of that; that might open up your mind.

Open up my mind a little bit.

I was pretty stoked when that insight came through.

I'm like, Oh, check this out.

Check this out.

Oh, my goodness, I got an awesome analogy for what systems are.

They're not broccoli.

They're way more like vaccines than anything else that we have available in the business world.

Alright, look forward to seeing you on tomorrow's episodes.
